CHAPTER 6

The heavy humidity of the evening finally started giving way to another thunderstorm. Sporadic lightening filled the night sky and the low clouds were eerily highlighted by the city’s lights.

Letting herself into the back garden, Ashley took the wrought iron stairs up to the exterior entrance of her apartment and let herself in. The scent of cinnamon and eucalyptus from wreaths hanging in living room enveloped her and she knew she was home.

Since Royce poofed on her during the tour, leaving her mind spinning at his revelation that he haunted her, she’d been unable to focus on anything else. And his kiss upon her cheek still left her shaken and surprised. The touch, although gentle, had burned a path straight to her heart and she knew in that moment they had been destined for each other. No other kiss had ever affected her that way.

After taking a cool shower, rinsing the heat and humidity away, Ashley returned to her bedroom to dress. She had hoped to see Royce, yet he was nowhere to be found. Figured. Typical male. Ghost or mortal, they seemed to all be the same. After all, he’d gotten a little mushy, and guys being guys, she wondered if he was going to hide for a little bit. Part of her wanted that and another part, a larger part, didn’t.

She went to the living room and picked up the book and began reading, learning about the various legends and curses. Some of the stories were terrifying, others sad. When she came to Royce Kingston’s curse, she actually started shaking, terrified that she was about to get her answers.

Ashley took a deep breath and read.

It was well known throughout New Orleans society that Celeste held tender feelings for the renowned rake, Royce Kingston. Her dramatic reaction when he didn’t return her feelings and she confronted him at a ball directly in front of one of the biggest New Orleanians gossips and soon word filled parlors and ballrooms how she’d cried and pleaded with him to love her. The action left society reeling, wondering when everything had gone so wrong and why no one saw how desperate Celeste had truly become. Lives had been forever altered and Royce Kingston died tragically and rumored to haunt the living until he could be blessed by love once again.

At least this confirmed everything the tour guide had said, not that it made her feel any better.

Ashley decided things had to change. Her attraction to a ghost was counterproductive, and at this rate, she’d never find her happy ending. It was time to help Royce on his way so she could focus on a real life man to fall in love with.

She never understood why unrequited love was romanticized. When only one person was committed to a relationship, the end result always meant someone got hurt, and possibly beyond what they could handle. Granted, she’d never think to put a curse on a person, but she understood what prompted the young girl to go to such extremes.
